At first glance 'Daniel' appears to be a traditional head and shoulder portrait. Dressed in navy, a striped scarf wrapped tightly around his neck, the bearded gentleman looks patiently at the viewer. Light reflects off his high forehead emphasising the deep coloured skin tones of summer skin.
Painted from life, light brush marks have feathered the skin with colour, smudging edges and lines. As a consequence the implied transience contrasts with the solid, stable impression of the sitter.
